While it's not yet the promised hands-on coverage just yet (E3 is next week, have a little patience), we do get to share what anxious fans can expect from Harmonix's next iteration of their popular music game when it comes to instruments.
Apart from the previously announced 25-key keyboard that will add a truly 'musical' function to the game, it's worth repeating that it will also be compatible with PC MIDI software programs as well. For added fun, the new keyboard can either be played normally (laid down), or in full 80s-style 'keytar' mode, which means rocking out to your favorite songs with one of the most maligned instruments of all time.
But what's new is the intriguing MIDI Pro Adapter box, which lets players who already have capable MIDI keyboards to play the game without having to invest in the stock one.
But most incredible is the new Fender Mustang Pro guitar controller, which features a blistering combination of 102 buttons and strings. Much like its keyboard cousin, the goal is to help users migrate from merely playing the 'game' to full-fledged music itself. Interestingly, the Mustang Pro will be manufactured by Mad Catz, thanks to a new partnership struck up between the two companies.
Rock Band 3 will also feature upgraded cymbols, three-part vocal harmonies (also featured in their own their The Beatles: Rock Band), as well as considerable changes to the look and feel of other instruments. More details as they come in, and get ready to graduate from simply matching up colored blocks to something truly substantial when the game hits this fall.
